Seamless gutters are fast becoming popular among homeowners and home builders. A seamless rain gutter system is usually distinguished by its top section which is rounded on one side. This curved edge serves two important purposes. First, it allows the water to flow right into the gutter itself. Second, it prevents leaves, objects and other debris from getting into the gutter and clogging it. The slope actually lets these objects slide away from the gutter instead of inside it.

Seamless gutters are constructed out of aluminum, galvanized steel or copper. Typically, measuring, fitting and cutting them through the use of a seamless gutter machine are part of seamless gutter installation. This is usually, if not always, done on location.

Because seamless gutters are made of metal, they’re well-known for their resilience and strength. Let’s take a look at some of the other benefits of seamless gutters:

Longevity. As I mentioned, seamless gutters are extremely strong and resilient. They resist almost all forms of damage. In some cases, seamless gutters have been known to outlast even the building or home they protect.

Low maintenance. The curved edges of seamless gutters are designed to prevent leaves, dirt and debris from clogging them. They are also designed to make sure that rainwater flows directly into the gutter and the downspout.

Because there aren’t any seams, the chance that leaks will occur is greatly reduced. Since they’re also durable, you won’t have to repair them as often as you would regular gutters.

Cost-effective. The cost of seamless gutters may be higher than regular PVC or aluminum gutters, but you get more value out of your money (i.e. fewer repairs, less maintenance, better water channeling, better appearance and easy set-up).

More aesthetically pleasing. Because they lack seams, seamless gutters look better compared to regular gutters.

Increased safety. During the winter months, sharp icicles tend to form from gutter leaks and can be dangerous to people. Since seamless gutters virtually eliminate the appearance of leaks, you won’t have to worry about these dangerous icicles.

Prevents other home damage. Leaks from gutters can cause staining and possible damage to the exterior and structure of your house. If these happen, you’d have to spend money to fix them.

Therefore, if you’re looking to install gutters that can last through an entire lifetime, go with seamless gutters. They are built to last through decades. You will definitely get more value out of your money.

Many people choose to hire professionals to perform the rather meticulous task of gutter installation. However, that doesn’t mean it can’t be done by homeowners like you. You can start your own DIY gutter installation project even if you have absolutely zero experience in home improvement. You’re going to need a little help though.

For some types of gutters installation may require the expertise of a professional. Generally, the steps are pretty much the same. Learning them isn’t difficult either. Here are some pro tips on how to install gutters:

Take a picture or draw a bird’s eye view of your house. Mark the sides on which you’d like to install gutters. On each line of gutter you’ve drawn, indicate the length. Diagrams like these will help you more properly estimate the amount of material you need, especially how much aluminum gutter you’ll need to buy.

Take into consideration the size of your roof when selecting gutter sizes. Large roof areas drain the most water and if you use small gutters, the amount of water might overwhelm your gutter and damage it. For sides that drain large areas of your roof, install bigger gutters (use oversized ones). If you live in areas that are prone to torrential rains, install oversized gutters all the way.

Don’t experiment with sealants, silicone or other types of caulk. Use only special gutter sealant to caulk the seams and rivets. Also, don’t use your tools nor your fingers to “spread” sealants. Just let them flow and set naturally.

Add a little slope to the gutters (especially those that are more than 40 feet in length). The size of your gutters will determine how fast water drains from them. Sloping your gutters (even just slightly) will allow rainwater to flow through them fast. This prevents standing water which can corrode your gutters and leak through the seams and rivets. All you need is a tiny slope.

When sloping long gutters, start the slope from the middle going down in both directions. Be sure to install a downspout on both ends.

If possible, install downspouts in inconspicuous but unobstructed locations. Stay clear of electric meters, sidewalks or hose bibs.

Here are some extra gutter maintenance tips for you. Make sure to regularly clean your gutters. Twice a year, remove any leaves or dirt that might clog up and damage your gutters. You may hire a company that specializes in cleaning and maintaining gutters. This will extend the lifespan of your gutter and prevent other problems such as clogged downspouts or bacterial build-up.

When remodeling or designing your home–to-be we all tend to think of the fun and decorative side of things. We take time to plan for floors, siding, paint, tiles, and more while we forget about some of the other important aspects when building a house. Guttering is a very important part of a house in order to prevent unnecessary damage. Gutters channel rain off of the roof and away from the house. When gutters become clogged with debris, the rain flow can be blocked and build up over time. This can then result in damage to your home because of the water spilling over the gutters and down the sides of the house. Here are some of the basics about gutters and things to remember:

•	As mentioned above, gutters can easily be clogged with debris such as leaves. To stop larger debris from getting into your gutter there are guards you can purchase to block the debris. This will save you from needing a guttering service and the added cost that comes along with them. However, it is important to remember that you will still need to clean your gutters occasionally. Even though the guard blocks larger debris, it doesn’t stop smaller debris such as dirt-so do not put off keeping your gutters clean and working properly.
•	Gutters can come without a downspout. This means that the water is being drained off the roof, but is running down the side of your house. This downspout will keep the water draining away from your home.
•	One of the most popular choices of gutters are pvc rain gutters. This material is very light-weight but still very strong. It requires very little maintenance, making this a very cost effective material to choose for gutters.
•	The cost of gutters varies between installers and the type of material chosen for the gutters. The average home has between 120-250 feet of rain gutters. This number can increase or decrease depending on the number of stories and the amount of the roof line. The average cost for PCV gutters is $3-$5 per lineal foot to have someone install it. This is about $360-$600 for 120 feet and $750-$1250 for 250 feet. If you want to do this yourself, material of PVC only costs about $50-$100 for 120 feet and $90-$180 for 250 feet. If installing the gutter yourself, make sure to have all guttering supplies before beginning.
•	Overtime, gutters will need to be replaced. It is difficult to know when replacement guttering is needed. Some common signs of an old or malfunctioning gutter include: sagging of the gutter, the gutter pulling away from the roof, rusted spots on the gutter, home flooding, exterior paint damage, siding damage, and decrease or complete lack of water flow from the downspouts. Pay attention to these signs to prevent water damage to your home.

Overall, do not forget about the importance of gutters. If the correct type of gutter is installed, you will be saved from the nightmare of dealing with water damage that could have been prevented!
