Before you even start looking for a siding contractor, be sure you are already certain about what type of siding you want installed. Not all siding contractors work with all types of siding. There are those who specialize on only one type.

Now once you’ve finalized the type and color of siding you want installed, start hunting for a good contractor. Here are some street-smart tips and advice on how you can pull that off:

Check around your neighborhood for houses that have sidings that look perfectly installed. Use your neighborly charm and inquire. Chances are they’ve been installed by really good roofing and siding contractors. Before you know it, you have their phone number.

When shopping around for the siding materials you are going to use, try to inquire about installation quotes too, especially from the store where you buy your siding. Some stores offer discounts with the installation. Be wary, though, because some stores actually charge considerably more than what their installers do.

Get as many quotes as you can. About 3 to 4. This way, you can compare them and find out which one can give you more value out of your money.

Get recommendations from family, friends and even your neighbors.

When gathering quotes from vinyl siding contractors to evaluate, make sure you give each bidding contractor the same specifications and job details (including the time frame you wish the project to be completed, how large your house is and the type of siding material you’ll be asking them to install).

Consider three factors when evaluating quotes, bids and estimates (in the following order): experience, price, testimonials (if any) and your impression. Experience matters. It’s up to you if you want to give the job to a beginner; however, if you’re not willing to risk the success of the installation, try to look for a more experienced one. Experience and expertise comes before price because your goal is to get more value out of your money. What use is paying less for the installation if you’re not guaranteed that the siding is properly set-up?

Be clear about the terms of the project. If there is old siding to be removed or debris to be cleaned out, be sure to let your bidding contractors know about it before they put in their bids or take on the project. Don’t surprise them with extra labor. Be a good employer.

If possible, when gathering quotes and estimates, have the contractor visit your house and inspect the site. This way, they’ll have a clear idea of your project.

The most exciting part of installing vinyl siding is deciding on the color. I’m pretty sure that many people would agree. It may also be the most time-consuming phase too. When faced with the task of choosing vinyl siding colors, many people will find themselves lost in a pile of color chips at some point. Other people end up changing their minds many times before deciding on a final color.

Perhaps if you focused your attention on five specific factors, the whole color decision process won’t be as difficult as other people come to believe it is. Let’s have a look at these factors:

The Style of Your Home

Your home’s style and design is absolutely important when considering a color for it. It will determine the look and feel of your home for years to come. It can even become the “brand” of your home. Try looking for color trends among homes whose styles are similar to yours. Pictures will help you visualize the look that you want for your home.

Your Neighborhood

Many people want their homes to stand out; others don’t. Either way, you wouldn’t want your home to stand out in a bad way. You should pick a color that lets your home “mesh” well with its neighbors but not necessarily be invisible. The key is to stand out but blend well. Again look for color trends among houses in your neighborhood. Find a color that’s a few shades higher or lower than what’s common in your neighborhood. For instance, in a neighborhood where houses are all donning neutral colors, try picking a soft pastel yellow shade (not too bright).

Appeal to Other People

You’d want your colors to be liked by other people too, not just you. You may not be planning on selling your home anytime soon but just in case that day comes, you’d want your potential buyers to like its color.

Color Maintenance

Think about how much time you are willing to invest in preserving the color of your home. Consider the climate you live in. For instance, if you live in a place where the wind keeps blowing dust all over the place, white would probably be a bad idea.

Personal Taste

Your color choice may not necessarily affect your vinyl siding cost but if in the long run, the color of your home loses its appeal to you, you’re going to have to spend a lot of money reinstalling new siding. Of course, you shouldn’t leave out your own preference out of the picking. Pick a color you love to look at. You are going to come home to that color every day so you better be happy about your final choice.

Did you know that you can cut the cost of vinyl siding installation by half if you did the work yourself? Installation of vinyl siding is challenging but it’s not difficult. However, there are things you will need to learn and understand in order to get professional results, even if it’s your first time doing vinyl siding installation.

Get the Right Tools For the Job

The tools required for vinyl siding installation are pretty basic ones. If you’re a DIY-er, then you probably have all of these tools and materials down. It could really cut down on your total vinyl siding installation cost. Here’s a rundown of all of the stuff that you need:

Caulking gun

Chalk line

Circular saw

Drill

Framing square

Hammer

Ladders

Level

Tape measure

Tin snips

Utility knife

In addition, you will need specialty tools including a nail-slot punch and a snap-lock punch.

Don’t start unless the surface is prepared

The side of your house where you want the vinyl installed should be as smooth as possible. Make sure that it’s solid too. If you see any cracks, caulk them. You’ll find many around windows and doors. Be sure to seal and energy leaks as well.

Now is the proper time to install any protective sheathing, such as foam sheathing and air/water barriers. Foam sheathing can help you save on energy by acting as an extra layer of insulation for your home.

Work when the weather is dry and warm

Why? It’s considerably easier to work with vinyl siding and trims because they are more pliable. You can cut them with tin snips without much difficulty and effort.

Don’t ignore your vinyl siding manufacturer’s guidebook

If you don’t have it with you, get one from the manufacturer. Vinyl trims require special cuts and methods for nailing. You have to follow the instructions by heart to make sure that rainwater doesn’t seep through your vinyl siding and your trim.

Nail the siding panels correctly!

Nailing the sidings is vital to the success of the installation. Heat from the sun and other sources can cause your siding to expand and grow. If you did not nail them tightly enough, the slightest gust of wind can cause your sidings to rattle and flap. On the other hand, if you nail them too tightly, they can bubble up, bend or bow during really hot days.

How do you nail them right? Make sure that the vinyl flange is held tight against your sheathing. The head of the nail must be 1/32 inch (about 0.80 millimeters) from the vinyl siding. Use the thickness of a dime (1 millimeter) to guide you when you nail the vinyl sidings.

One of the most popular materials for exterior home siding is vinyl shake siding. There are three main reasons why this type of shake siding is more preferred by homeowners and home builders alike. It’s more affordable. It requires less maintenance. It’s easier to install.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Since vinyl siding is manufactures, it can come in an almost unlimited number of colors. New vinyl choices have been enhanced to be able to resist wear and tear better than traditional sidings.

Practically part-plastic, shake vinyl siding is very sensitive to direct heat (i.e. from barbecues, grills or other sources). This is particularly why fire safety experts criticize it. This increased sensitivity to heat and fire makes it easier for a house fire to spread to adjacent houses, quite unlike other siding materials such as brick.

Another disadvantage is that vinyl siding cannot be burned nor can it be recycled. If burned, it produces highly toxic dioxin gases which when inhaled can cause serious respiratory problems among humans.

Unlike wood or brick siding, vinyl siding does not add insulation to a house or building. Oftentimes, people an extra layer containing insulation materials such as foam to get around this limitation.

Types Of Vinyl Shake Siding

Vinyl siding comes in many varieties as well. Depending on the look you want for your home, any one of this can be your best choice.

Traditional. Compared to other types of exterior finishes, this excels in durability.

Seamless. This gives walls a very smooth appearance. Almost invisible at first, the seams slowly start to become obvious when the siding exposed to enough wear and tear.

Solid Core. This contains a solid foam core which allows it to be installed perfectly flat against the walls of the building. Unlike other types of vinyl siding, this provided an added layer of insulation.

Liquid. Compared to other varieties, this type requires almost zero maintenance. More durable than paint, this type is very weather-resistant. Another added benefit is that it reflects heat, which helps cut down on your energy costs.

Board and Batten. This type of vinyl siding attempts to duplicate the appearance of cedar shake siding, which is very popular due to its rustic look.

With all these varieties of vinyl shakes siding, it won’t be hard for you to find a finish that suits your needs and your taste.

One of the few components that can make or break the appearance and appeal of a home is its siding. Over the years, materials used for house siding grow more diverse. Choosing among the different types of siding hasn’t become any more difficult though. Whether you’re replacing your old siding or just picking one for your new home, there’s at least one that can satisfy one’s needs and taste.

Generally, there are four types of house siding, based on the nature of the material used to make them. Back in the old days, there were only four (which will be enumerated first in the list below). Due to advances in engineering and chemistry, new materials emerged, adding more variety to the collection.

Wood Siding

This is the oldest type of siding available. In comparison with other siding materials, it’s considerably less expensive. The actual cost, however, depends on the type of wood used. Homeowners and home builders who prefer wood siding do so because of its time-tested aesthetic quality and flexibility.

There are many types of wood siding. These vary depending on the type of wood used as well as on the general arrangement of the shingles, shakes or planks. Here are the four basic types of wood siding:

Board and Batten

Plywood siding

Wood shingles or shakes

Clapboard

Lap siding

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding closely competes with aluminum siding in terms of cost and maintenance requirements. Unlike aluminum siding, it does not need to be painted.

Since it’s synthetic, it comes in almost an unlimited number of colors, giving you more freedom to choose which fits the design of your home. Vinyl siding is also highly resistant to wear and tear, but has very low tolerance for direct heat.

Vinyl siding provides no additional insulation. A layer of foam needs to be added to compensate for this. Furthermore, vinyl isn’t particularly environment-friendly. When burned, it produces toxic dioxins that, when inhaled, can cause serious respiratory problems. Unlike wood or aluminum, vinyl cannot be recycled.

There are also many types of vinyl siding available:

Traditional

Liquid

Board and batten

Solid core

Seamless

Aluminum Siding

Compared to wood siding, aluminum needs only little maintenance and can last for more than a couple of decades. Extremely resistant to damage, the only things you would need to worry about are dents and damage to the overlying paint. To improve the durability of aluminum siding, you can add plastic or vinyl coating.

Cement Fiber Siding

This is a fairly new addition to the house siding family, designed to simulate the appearance of wood siding. However, unlike wood siding, it’s far more durable and long-lasting.

Since cement fiber can be physically manipulated, various trims and designs can be created with it. It also comes in various paneling styles, far outnumbering the varieties vinyl and aluminum have to offer.

Cement fiber is highly durable and can withstand weathering far more than other types of house siding can. Because of this, it requires very little maintenance and upkeep. However, due to its superior durability and flexibility, cement fiber siding can be quite expensive.

Are you thinking about installing new vinyl siding for your home? If you are, then you’re most probably wondering how you can accurately estimate how much you will need to spend to make it happen. There are several ways with which you can pull this off. You can visit a local home improvement store and inquire. Or you could make use of a vinyl siding calculator.

Vinyl siding calculators are often available online. This makes acquiring an estimate more convenient for people like you.

Some Tips and Advice For You

Get at least 3 to 4 estimates for your siding. You could use a vinyl siding cost calculator for each or you could visit a local hardware or home improvement store. The idea is for you to be able to compare rates and prices. Oftentimes, you’ll find yourself in a position where you could make negotiations based on the other estimates you’ve acquired. Oftentimes, it can take more than just 4 bids to find the perfect contractor for you. But it would be well worth your effort.

Low Bids and Estimates

Very low bids or estimates could mean a few things. On the bad side, very low bids could be the mark of fly by night scammers, illegal contractors or beginners or inexperienced contractors. However, this isn’t always the case. Oftentimes, contractors offer very low bids because they’re just hungry for work (business is slower than usual) or because the siding project you are offering is very easy for them.

High Bids and Estimates

On the other hand, very high bids aren’t always bad and most often, you’ll find their high prices justified. Some siding projects are just essentially expensive. For instance, cement fiber siding projects require a lot of work and materials. An ethical and legitimate contractor should be able to explain this to you. In order to better understand their terms, try to learn as much about siding installation as you can.

Some types of houses are labor-intensive (i.e. three-storey houses, houses perched on difficult locations or even houses built far from town). Because of these reasons, the contractor would have to exert three times more effort to finish the project. It’s only appropriate that you compensate him for it.

Some projects can pose certain dangers to the contractor, such as removal or installation of asbestos siding. Asbestos can have very serious adverse effects on the human body. It would be proper if you paid the contractor generously for risking his life.

The bottom line is, whether you are using an online vinyl siding price calculator or negotiating with an actual contractor, be wary of the schemes people do in order to get you to pay more. However, don’t be too overly paranoid. There are plenty of ethical and legitimate contractors out there. Finding them isn’t as tricky as you think.

Despite the dwindling popularity of t1 11 siding, which reached its peak back in the 60′s all the way to the early 80′s, t1 11 is still viable for most of today’s houses. T1 11 wood siding is still in mass production. If you’re still looking for a more natural-looking, wood-grained siding for your home, t1 11 still stands as an optimal choice.

Quality and Price

T1 11 siding comes in two types: plywood and oriented stand board (OSB). In terms of t1 11 siding prices, plywood siding wins the race. Plywood siding may cost more than OSB but it is, nevertheless, far more superior in terms of quality. It’s more durable and it works well with most types of finishing. If you’re looking for a more natural look for your wood, you can stain it. You can also prime and paint it if you prefer.

On the other hand, OSB is less aesthetically flexible. It cannot be stained, only painted. This is one of the reasons why most homeowners shun the use of OSB. Nevertheless, it’s still cost-effective but if you’re willing to pay more for better quality, go with plywood siding.

Performance

Like I said plywood siding is more durable but when it comes to functionality, both are equal. OSB is relatively strong, due to how it’s manufactured. Also because it’s very affordable, it’s widely used in home construction. However, it still doesn’t match up to the strength of plywood siding.

OSB siding absorbs water far more than plywood siding and because of this, it expands more. In addition it becomes more susceptible to wear, tear and rot.

Maintenance and Upkeep

In terms of maintenance, both are the same. Through regular maintenance, you can keep your t1 11 siding in good condition. Also, the amount of maintenance you need to do will also depend on whether you stained or painted your siding. If you stained your siding, you may need to re-apply another protective coat after three to five years, depending on how good your stain product is. On the other hand if you painted your siding, you’ll only have to do a repainting job after a decade or so.

How To Install T1 11 Siding

Installation is crucial for t1 11 siding. If installed properly, it can last a lifetime and can withstand more general wear and tear. Don’t be afraid to pay more for an expert contractor if you need to, even if you only need to fix certain areas of your siding. You can do it yourself but if it’s going to be your first time doing it, seek the advice of professionals before you undertake such a delicate task.

Home improvement decisions always come with many questions: what looks the best, what costs less, but mainly what is cost effective but stills look high in quality? When wanting to finish the exterior of your home, discount siding has become very popular. But what siding option offer the most benefits and what costs less?

Three Siding Options:

Discount cedar siding has become a very popular choice because of what it has to offer. Cedar itself is the most durable soft wood used as siding, it provides very good insulation, and works as a great noise barrier. But who wants siding that does all this and looks terrible? Well you’re in luck if you chose this type of discount wood siding, because it is also very beautiful. One thing to keep in mind is the maintenance. Cedar is a wood and will weather overtime if not properly maintained. If the cedar is left untreated it will lose its natural color and take on a more rugged look. Depending on the environment you live in, you may need to re-stain or re-surface of the cedar every 3-5 years. An average cost for a 2,000 square foot home is anywhere between $10,000 to $14,000. This is a more expensive option because it is a wood siding. But because of the great benefits many choose to use this for their home.

Discount log siding is a great choice if wanting to give your home or cabin a nice and warm log cabin look. Log siding can come from natural wood or even as vinyl. There is a variety of different colors and textures one can choose from, or this can be kept in its natural wood color. Wood log siding does require maintenance regularly and is expensive compared to other siding options, even regular wood or cedar siding. Vinyl log siding still gives the look of a log structure but is less expensive, lower maintenance, and much easier and faster to install.

Discount vinyl siding is one of the most popular, if not the most popular choice of siding material. It comes in many different colors and textures, is very low maintenance, easy to repair, has insulating properties, and is the less expensive option. For a standard 2,000 square foot home, vinyl siding costs around $7,000 to $11,000 (which is substantially less than log or cedar siding as mentioned above). While vinyl siding does have insulation to help conserve energy, many cedar siding options have better insulation and is a better noise barrier.

All of these options have their pros and cons. Cedar offers a naturally beautiful look that you cannot quick get with vinyl, but is more expensive. Log siding offers a very unique look but can be very spendy if you desire it in wood. Vinyl is a definite siding discount when you look at the price, but may not offer the amount of insulation you desire or the look you are wanting. It is ultimately your decision of what is best for you.

Home maintenance and remodeling is a popular investment for home owners. When remodeling, there are many choices to consider. One of the main choices to ponder is how to create the look you want. There are many options to choose for the exterior of your home, one option being brick siding.

Brick House Siding:

This is a great choice for creating a unique look for your home. It has many benefits: it is very strong and durable, long lasting, weather resistant, and very easy to maintain. Another plus is that it does not have to be painted. It is a great insulator to your home by creating a barrier to the outside temperature and weather.

Even though brick doesn’t require much maintenance, it is a good idea to regularly apply a clear water-repellent coat since brick is porous, especially if you live in a rainy climate.

Brick siding is one of the more expensive siding choices. This can dissuade many from using it. For those that love the look of brick but feel they can’t afford it, there is an alternative and still have the look you desire. It is called brick veneer siding. This is a fake brick siding that is manmade material that tends to be much lighter than brick. A benefit to brick veneer is that it comes in a variety of colors, different textures and patterns, and sizes. This siding is also very durable and long lasting. It also has the look of brick, but without the high installation cost.

Different siding options: Brick vs. Vinyl siding

One of the very popular siding choices is vinyl. Some of the reasons are because of the fact that it comes in many different colors and textures, allowing home owners to get the exact look they want. It is also very fast and easy to install. Vinyl can easily be installed over practically any previous house exterior, including putting the siding over brick. On the other hand, it is much more difficult to install brick siding over another surface that the home was originally designed with. Because of the difficulty, this type of siding is usually chosen when the home is first being built. This is one reason why it is less popular. Also, brick is more expensive than vinyl and other types of siding. It is however, very durable to wind and other weather conditions- more durable than vinyl. Even though originally more expensive, because of its durability, lack of maintenance, and insulating features, home owners save more money choosing this type of siding. It gives the home a classic look that can’t be found with vinyl.

Overall, brick siding is a great choice as an exterior to your home. It will last forever, doesn’t require hardly any maintenance, will save you money with bills, but best of all creates a unique look that you will love coming home to.

T 111 siding was used very frequently on homes built in the 70’s and 80’s because of the ease and the fact that T 111 siding prices were lower than wood or other siding options. The siding itself is not as durable as other options, because is not very weather proof. It is untreated, and the only protection it has against the weather and moisture is the paint covering. When there is too much moisture, rain, or water, or even heat, the siding delaminates. Once this starts to happen, your problems will start to multiply. As the problem worsens, you can run into now having to deal with water intrusion and mold problems, which will eventually lead to accelerated rotting. The rotting can happen if not taken care of quickly because the siding pulls away from the house allowing the water to seep behind the siding panels. Inspect the siding frequently to assess for areas where delaminating has started. If caught soon, the siding can be replaced before the rotting occurs. If you notice there are areas where the siding is beginning to look damaged, it is a problem that can be solved. All the siding on your house does not need to be replaced. The areas of damage are the only siding that needs to be switched out. When replacing the siding, watch for water damage or rotting that has gone past the siding into the framing of the house. If there is, then you’re dealing with a whole different problem, and you will not only have to replace the siding, but also the failing wall.

How it is made:

T 111 is made from engineered wood (wood products and other materials pressed together), and is a type of plywood siding that comes as T 111 wood siding, or T 111 cedar siding. These panels can be made to look like tradition clapboards. Since the grain of the siding is fairly uniform, this wood won’t look completely like real wood siding. However, this will still have a more natural look than vinyl, aluminum or steel. Because of the fact that it is “plywood”, as well as having problems with weather proofing, it is no longer a popular choice for homes like is once was. However, this is a great option for sheds. It is fast and easy to install, and very cost efficient. If taken care of, this siding holds up great for the purpose needed. Just remember: when installing T 111 siding, make sure it is sealed against the weather, otherwise you will have a higher chance of dealing with the problems of delaminating.
