When people complain about leaks near and around their chimneys, the most likely culprit is the chimney flashing. This is the sheet metal lining the base of chimneys on rooftops. The purpose of this sheet of metal is to keep the area where the chimney intersects with the rooftop watertight.

Time To Work On It

Leaks happen if the roof chimney flashing is either rusted, falling out, improperly installed or just simply missing. Sometimes you’ll find the base of chimneys covered with roofing tar (which is definitely a sign that something’s afoot!). On either case, you’d have to perform chimney flashing repair or install a new one.

You might also want to install new chimney flashing when you install new shingles on your roof. This way, you’ll be sure your flashing will last as long as your new roofing. If you install them properly, you’ll get around 20 to 40 years.

If it’s your first time doing chimney flashing installation or repair by yourself, you could use a few tips. Here they are.

When buying custom-made saddles, prepare the following information: the exact width of your chimney and the slope of your roof. You will need to give this to sheet metal shops when you order your saddle.

To make your flashing last longer, you can apply a coat of paint over it. Make sure you clean the surface of the galvanized metal first with lacquer thinner. You could also buy pre-painted metal chimney flashing but these are more expensive.

Make sure you overlap your flashing properly. Even if you do a very good job, the corners will still be vulnerable. That’s okay. Those small spots can be sealed with high-quality polyurethane caulk. Bear in mind though that caulk cannot make up for poorly overlapped flashing.

Don’t hesitate to buy safety equipment. You may need a sturdy ladder and roof brackets. If you want to feel much safer, get a safety harness, rope-grab, lanyard and a roof anchor. These items are well worth the investment.

Be sure to inspect your chimney and your flashing once every couple of years for any open corners, leaks and other problems. Make repairs as necessary.

If you do properly perform chimney flashing steps, you’ll be able to fix your leaks and save hundreds of dollars in the process. Just be sure to apply some of the tips above so that you can do it like pros do, even if it is your first time.

Many people say that carpet installation is a wallet-drainer. You don’t buy a carpet everyday but when you do, it’s bound to put a stress on your budget. Carpet cost depends on a few factors and if you’ve got the charm or the negotiating skills, then maybe you can shave off a few dollars off your final cost of carpet.

Here are some tips that you might want to try out.

Buying your carpet is just the tip of the iceberg. Many stores add certain hidden costs to your final carpet costs.

Be clear with your goals. Let the salesperson know what you want and how much you are happy to spend. Tell him or her that you will give your final purchase decision based on the following:

Whether the carpet blends well with the room you’re installing it in

Whether you think the carpet gives you great value for your money

Oftentimes, stores will offer you a free measuring service. Avoid getting trapped into buying a carpet by making it clear that agreeing to accept their free offer doesn’t require you to commit to a purchase.

The final cost of the carpet includes various other materials such as fitting, grippers and the underlay. When you are getting a quote, be sure to ask the store to list down each item on the bill. This will help you analyze for which item you can save more money. Also, if you are just replacing your old carpet, consider “recycling” your old grippers and underlay. Try to check if they can still do their job; otherwise, replace them.

Carpets come in various colors that are oftentimes hard to distinguish from one another despite the fact that they come with different names. While you’re scouting for colors, it’s not unlikely that you’ll find two similar carpet shades but with considerably different prices. For instance, one costs $14.99 while the other one costs $30.00. Go for the cheaper one. Sometimes, you’ll be surprised that the level of quality never really matches up with the price.

Loyalty has its rewards. If you decide to return to the store for additional supplies or to finalize your order, always speak with the same salesperson. Especially if they’ve been nice to you.

Never accept the first price they offer you. You’ll be surprised at how much room for manoeuvering and negotiating there is. When they ask you if you can make a final decision today, it usually means you can still negotiate your way to a better deal. For instance, you could say, “If you include the rods and the fitting for free, I’ll buy it right now!”.

Once you have your carpet, the next thing you need to worry about is the carpet installation cost. About 90% of the cost of installing a carpet falls on labor. So if you’ve got the charm, you can negotiate your way to getting the best deal.

Drywall finishing is a skill that one acquires through experience and practice. It requires eye-hand coordination, which not a lot of people possess. But this doesn’t mean you can’t learn how to mud and tape drywall yourself. You will need to develop a feel for the flexibility of your drywall taping tools and your other equipment.

Let’s take a look at some tips from expert drywall contractors and find out how they do it.

Tip #1: Don’t start unless the drywall is ready

Make sure that the drywall is tight against wall and ceiling, and that the joints are secured in place. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of fasteners and screws. Ensure that seams are tapered tight, with a slight gap for allowance. Give joints a gap of about a quarter of an inch. When you’re done all that, your drywall should be ready.

Tip #2: Use the right tools

When performing drywall finishing jobs, don’t just limit yourself to one broad knife. Keep two sizes handy, such as 10 and 12-inch knives. Stainless steel knives are a favorite among expert drywall contractors. For taping, on the other hand, use a flexible steel one that’s about 5-inches in width. As for tapes, use high-quality drywall joint tape or self adhesive drywall tape.

Tip #3: Don’t use really sharp taping knives

Brand-new drywall taping tools tend to be very sharp and can tear the paper tape out as you glide along the seams. Use a file to make the edge of your taping knife a little rounder before using it.

Tip #4: Do your flat seams first, your inside corners last

When taping, work on your flat seams first and work your way to within half an inch from your corners. Doing the inside corners last ensures that your tape overlaps the tape on the seams. Also, before you even start taping, make sure that all metal beads are nailed securely in place.

Tip #5: Start working on your second coat immediately

After you’ve finished taping, you can immediately start working on your second coat. You don’t have to wait for the tape to be dry. Your first tape will dry out almost the same time as your second coat does.

Tip #6: Use the right kind of sealer or primer

Before you start painting, you need to apply a good primer and sealer. Use a product that removes texture problems and joint banding, which mostly happens after one tries to paint a freshly-finished wall. Applying a primer or sealer is a must. If you don’t do it, you’ll regret it.
Finishing drywalls requires skills that you develop through experience. Nevertheless, if you follow the tips above, you can still get fantastic, professional results.

Somerset Hardwood Flooring is one of the best brands of floor surface products out there, as it features the latest in flooring technology. For its finish, it uses an advanced formula containing polyutherane and aluminum oxide. Because of this, Somerset hardwood floors are exceptionally durable, more scratch resistant and they retain their gloss longer than most brands.

With minimal effort your Somerset hardwood floor can always look new. However, in order to maximize its lifespan, you need to follow certain guidelines in routine and preventative care. Here are 7 tips that you might find handy.

Clean up water spills immediately. Never let water stand on your hardwood floor for a very long time. Avoid pouring water on your floor either. Water can damage the structure of your wood flooring and its finish.

Use a damp rag or mop when cleaning your floor. Even then, you should make sure the floor is wiped dry afterwards. No excess water and moisture should be left standing on the floor.

Use appropriate cleaning products. The Somerset Hardwood Floor Cleaner is exceptionally good for this type of job. It’s specially formulated to work well with Somerset wood finish.

Regularly sweep or vacuum your floor. At least once a week would suffice. Use a broom with soft fine bristles as they tend to capture the most dust.

To trap dirt and grit, place rugs or mats in places where there’s “high traffic” such as doorways and entrances. Be sure to keep your rugs and mats clean.

Use furniture protectors to avoid scratching and damaging the surface of your floor. Self-adhesive felt pads or other types of protective pads (i.e. non-marking rubber casters) used on the legs of your tables and chairs can help prevent damage when they’re moved across the floor.

Protect your floor from too much exposure to direct sunlight. When exposed to ultraviolet light from the sun, your floor can slowly take on an age-worn look. Its finish and color will change. This might cause uneven color patches on your floor if you’re not careful.

By following proper care and preventative steps, and applying a little bit of common sense, you can maintain the beauty of your floor for years and keep it looking brand new. You can even save money by minimizing the need for refinishing or repairs. Your Somerset Hardwood Flooring can last a lifetime if you properly care for it.

Bamboo is now becoming a very popular choice for flooring among homeowners and builders. Before it gained popularity in North America, cheap bamboo flooring has been used in Asia and other Pacific countries for decades. It wasn’t until recently that people saw its true economic, environmental and architectural potential.

Without further adieu here are five reasons why bamboo is an awesome choice for flooring materials.

Bamboo is stronger than many hardwoods

Quite interestingly, bamboo flooring is extremely harder and stronger than most hardwoods. Certain species of bamboo rate higher than maple and some almost rank twice as high as red oak, which is commonly used in households.

It’s surprisingly very resilient, despite the fact that it is classified in the plant kingdom as a type of grass (not a tree!). Bamboo floorings can withstand the impact that comes with dropping heavy objects on them. Bamboo resists denting more effectively than most hardwoods. As a matter of fact, while you’d normally have to be extremely careful with your hardwood floor, you won’t have to, even with cheap bamboo floors!

Bamboo is highly resistant to water

This is why it’s perfect as a flooring material. With most sought-after hardwoods (for instance, black walnut flooring), you’d have to immediately wipe puddles dry and you have to avoid performing wet maintenance. Bamboo flooring, on the other hand, isn’t so high maintenance.

Easy on the environment

It’s grass, after all! As a matter of fact, it’s THE fastest growing type of grass. It only takes 5 years for a bamboo plant to produce fully-mature shoots. After which, it’s ready for harvest and use. What’s even more wonderful about this is that even after you harvest them, they can just re-grow by themselves – no need to replant.

Now let’s consider hardwood trees (and most other trees for that matter). Red oak takes roughly 30 years (three decades!) to reach maximum height. Only then can it be cut down. And once you cut the tree down, you have to plant another fresh one in its place.

Easy to clean

Even a really cheap bamboo floor isn’t so high-maintenance. Most of the time, you’ll only need to sweep dust and dirt away using an ordinary broom. You don’t have to use any special type of cleaning agent or vacuum cleaner to keep your bamboo floor spic and span. However, if you do want to maximize the lifespan of your bamboo flooring, a little pampering isn’t so bad.

The best cheap bamboo flooring isn’t even hard to come by. Because it’s practically a renewable source of wood, the price of bamboo can compete with most other alternatives. With all of these benefits brought to light, it’s quite easy to see why bamboo flooring is fast becoming popular.

Despite the dwindling popularity of t1 11 siding, which reached its peak back in the 60’s all the way to the early 80’s, t1 11 is still viable for most of today’s houses. T1 11 wood siding is still in mass production. If you’re still looking for a more natural-looking, wood-grained siding for your home, t1 11 still stands as an optimal choice.

Quality and Price

T1 11 siding comes in two types: plywood and oriented stand board (OSB). In terms of t1 11 siding prices, plywood siding wins the race. Plywood siding may cost more than OSB but it is, nevertheless, far more superior in terms of quality. It’s more durable and it works well with most types of finishing. If you’re looking for a more natural look for your wood, you can stain it. You can also prime and paint it if you prefer.

On the other hand, OSB is less aesthetically flexible. It cannot be stained, only painted. This is one of the reasons why most homeowners shun the use of OSB. Nevertheless, it’s still cost-effective but if you’re willing to pay more for better quality, go with plywood siding.

Performance

Like I said plywood siding is more durable but when it comes to functionality, both are equal. OSB is relatively strong, due to how it’s manufactured. Also because it’s very affordable, it’s widely used in home construction. However, it still doesn’t match up to the strength of plywood siding.

OSB siding absorbs water far more than plywood siding and because of this, it expands more. In addition it becomes more susceptible to wear, tear and rot.

Maintenance and Upkeep

In terms of maintenance, both are the same. Through regular maintenance, you can keep your t1 11 siding in good condition. Also, the amount of maintenance you need to do will also depend on whether you stained or painted your siding. If you stained your siding, you may need to re-apply another protective coat after three to five years, depending on how good your stain product is. On the other hand if you painted your siding, you’ll only have to do a repainting job after a decade or so.

How To Install T1 11 Siding

Installation is crucial for t1 11 siding. If installed properly, it can last a lifetime and can withstand more general wear and tear. Don’t be afraid to pay more for an expert contractor if you need to, even if you only need to fix certain areas of your siding. You can do it yourself but if it’s going to be your first time doing it, seek the advice of professionals before you undertake such a delicate task.

A carpet stretcher is a handy tool that’s used in installing and repairing wall-to-wall carpets. It’s used to keep the carpeting flat, tight and even across the floor.

Typical carpet stretchers are long, equipped with ridges or teeth along the bottom. Using levers attached to it, you can keep the carpet taut while you tack and secure its edges. Though the length of most carpet stretchers make it inconvenient for you to move across them, they’re commonly manufactured using lightweight materials. This makes it easy for you to move it around whenever you need to.

Using carpet power stretchers can help save you more time and energy in installing carpets. Here are the basic steps you need to take in using a power stretcher. You will need your carpet power stretcher, tack strip, carpet knife and knee kicker for this, so have them ready.

Step 1: Place tack strips around the room. For best results, keep it about two-thirds the thickness of the carpet away from your wall. Afterwards, place the carpet pad.

Step 2: Start with the length of the carpet. Power stretch from the middle of the narrowest section of the room then work your way to the wider parts. After stretching, fasten the carpet onto the tack strip.

Step 3: Do the previous step several times, fanning out as you go. You don’t have to stretch the carpet parallel to the previous area.

Step 4: Using your knee kicker, set the carpet into place. Push it hard against the tack strip to secure it.

Step 5: Repeat steps 2 to 4 but this time work along the width of the room. Begin working in the center of the longest part of the room. Again, make sure to push the carpet into the tack strip to secure it and fan out as you go. For best results, work in 18-inch increments.

Step 6: Use your knee kicker to securely stretch and fasten any odd corners or tight spots.

Step 7: Use your carpet knife to trim and even out the edges of the carpet. Be careful not to cut it too short.

Inspect your carpet carefully when you’re done, especially the edges and corners to make sure there aren’t any loose parts or folds. When in doubt, try to seek the help of professionals before attempting to do this yourself. Use reliable and high-quality tools too, such as the Crain Carpet Stretcher.

Don’t try to walk backwards. If you need to work on something that’s behind you, take the time to make a nice broad U-turn to get to it.

Do take short steps and lift your leg when you walk. Do not attempt to take long strides with your drywall stilts. Also, do not drag your stilts as you walk; lift your feet from the ground.

Don’t reach out or lean your body too much while working. As much as possible, work directly above your stilts. Never reach for objects that are located lower than where your foot is.

Don’t attempt to adjust the height of your stilts while you’re wearing them. If you must leave them on, ask for assistance from another person.

Don’t carry heavy objects while on your stilts. Drywall stilts have load limits. If you want your stilts to last longer, try not to test this limit.

Do refrain from running or walking fast. Take gentle steps and always watch where you’re going or stepping.

Don’t use your stilts when you’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In the first place, you shouldn’t even be working.

Do take special precaution when handling used drywall stilts.

Do strap your stilts right. Always strap your legs first before your feet and never the other way around.

Do watch your head too. Especially if you’re working in rooms with low ceilings. Keep an eye out for chandeliers, hanging lights and other ceiling ornaments.

Don’t use your stilts on stairs. As much as possible, stay away from staircases or stairwells.

Carefully read and follow the tips above to avoid any serious damage or injury, to you and your drywall stilts.
These are similar to normal stilts that help one stand firmly and safely at a certain level, except that these come with bolts and can be adjusted.

These tools are very durable and helpful. However, to maximize use of them you will need to follow certain precautions when using them. Here are some tips on how to properly use a drywall stilt.

Do inspect your stilts before use. Make sure the bolts are securely and tightly fastened and fixed.

Do tread on suitable surfaces. Make sure you use your stilts on hard, stable and even surfaces. Unless you have proper support, avoid using them on uneven ground.

Don’t attempt to adjust the height of your stilts while you’re wearing them. If you must leave them on, ask for assistance from another person.

Don’t carry heavy objects while on your stilts. Drywall stilts have load limits. If you want your stilts to last longer, try not to test this limit.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a worker trying to bid on a project or a homeowner just trying to anticipate his or her expenses. Estimating drywall prices is an exercise that challenges your attention to detail. You don’t need to be skilled enough to pull it off but you need to learn about how the process of dry walling works.

Factors That Affect Drywall Pricing

Here are the factors that greatly affect the final price of a drywall project:

The size of the project or job – Most people believe that the larger the drywall project the more laborers will charge you for it. On the contrary, that’s not true. Most drywall contractors typically refuse to take small jobs but are willing to do so at a considerably higher price.

Materials – This will depend on how much material you need (which depends on the size of the drywall project) and where you buy them from.

Level of expertise – Expect expert drywall contractors to charge more. After all, quality does come at a price.

How fast you want the work done – Don’t be afraid to pay more if you want your drywall contractors to finish the job within a relatively small time frame.

Fresh job or unfinished project – Most drywall contractors will refuse to finish someone else’s work. A lot of rework will have to be done and most contractors will just choose to start over again, thus increasing the drywall installation prices. For scenarios like these, expect to pay more.

How To Estimate The Price of Drywall Projects

For this little exercise you will need a tape measure and a calculator. You may also want to write down the numbers as you go along.

Step 1: Find out the area of the wall that needs to be drywalled. Measure how tall the wall is and how wide it is. Multiply these together to get the area. Do this on all walls that need to be covered.

Step 2: Measure the surface area of your ceiling. Again, use the same formula (length multiplied by width).

Step 3: Add all the areas you came up with. What you have now is the size of the drywall project.

Step 4: Figure out how many drywall sheets are required for the project. There are two types of sheets you can use. You have 4-by-8 (32 square feet) and 4-by-12 (48 square feet) sheets. Divide the size of your project by each and round the numbers off. Determine which of these numbers will fair you well in terms of costs and dimension.

Step 5: Calculate total costs. If the job entails two or more rooms, it’s an average-sized job. This may cost you $40 per board or sheet. For smaller jobs (the size of one room or smaller), this may go up to about $60 per board. This already includes material and labor costs.

If you are looking for a decent laminate flooring option, then Witex flooring is one of your many choices. While most laminate floors are very similar in terms of quality, it’s always good to familiarize yourself with each brands different offerings before you decide which one to go with. When it comes to Witex laminate flooring you will have a few different options, and we will outline briefly those options today.

Generic Features of a Witex Floor

Witex floors have some general features that you should get to know. Not all of their 6 sub-brands/levles of flooring have each option, so make sure you check before you make your purchase.

Textures – Witex has basically 3 different types of textures: smooth grain, True-to-Grain, and a high-gloss finish texture. In order to get the True-to-Grain you will need to get their Artison line, and to get the high-gloss you will need to purchase the Witex Gandeur Collection.

Edging – You can choose between a smooth edge or a beveled edge (the beveled edge is available in the Town and Country line of laminate.

Plus! Sitlent Comfort Backing – This is the companies cushioning and noise reduction technology. Like most companies, they claim that it reduces noise and makes the floor feel more ’solid’ than other laminate floors. One nice thing about the Witex comfort backing is that it does come attached already to their floors, making it easier to install.

Surface Armor (r) – this is an aluminum oxide protection that is applied to every one of their floors. It’s purpose is to prevent scratches and bumps/indentions. Again, most laminate companies offer some type of similar protection.

LocTec (r) – one very nice advantage of witex laminate floors is that they do come with a good locking mechanism that does not require any type of glue, even in high-moisture areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Aqua Protect (r) – This is a protection layer (not available on all of their labels) that, much like it’s name suggests, protects against water damage. This is probably a decent and smart option for water prone areas, but remember no matter what the warranty is on your laminate floor, you should not allow water to sit on the floor for extended periods of time. The Aqua Protect (r) will help, but will not solve the problem.

Summary

There are some nice features that you can find with Witex flooring. Remember that you are still dealing with laminate (there is no such thing as Witex wood flooring, they only offer laminate products), and as such don’t expect a full wood replacement. However, you should get a decent, solid laminate floor that can be a good option for your home.
