Let’s take a look at some tips from expert drywall contractors and find out how they do it.
Tip #1: Don’t start unless the drywall is ready
Make sure that the drywall is tight against wall and ceiling, and that the joints are secured in place. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of fasteners and screws. Ensure that seams are tapered tight, with a slight gap for allowance. Give joints a gap of about a quarter of an inch. When you’re done all that, your drywall should be ready.
Tip #2: Use the right tools
When performing drywall finishing jobs, don’t just limit yourself to one broad knife. Keep two sizes handy, such as 10 and 12-inch knives. Stainless steel knives are a favorite among expert drywall contractors. For taping, on the other hand, use a flexible steel one that’s about 5-inches in width. As for tapes, use high-quality drywall joint tape or self adhesive drywall tape.
Tip #3: Don’t use really sharp taping knives
Brand-new drywall taping tools tend to be very sharp and can tear the paper tape out as you glide along the seams. Use a file to make the edge of your taping knife a little rounder before using it.
Tip #4: Do your flat seams first, your inside corners last
When taping, work on your flat seams first and work your way to within half an inch from your corners. Doing the inside corners last ensures that your tape overlaps the tape on the seams. Also, before you even start taping, make sure that all metal beads are nailed securely in place.
Tip #5: Start working on your second coat immediately
After you’ve finished taping, you can immediately start working on your second coat. You don’t have to wait for the tape to be dry. Your first tape will dry out almost the same time as your second coat does.
Tip #6: Use the right kind of sealer or primer
Before you start painting, you need to apply a good primer and sealer. Use a product that removes texture problems and joint banding, which mostly happens after one tries to paint a freshly-finished wall. Applying a primer or sealer is a must. If you don’t do it, you’ll regret it.
Finishing drywalls requires skills that you develop through experience. Nevertheless, if you follow the tips above, you can still get fantastic, professional results.
