Chimney Flashing – Do-It-Yourself Tips For Rookies
When people complain about leaks near and around their chimneys, the most likely culprit is the chimney flashing. This is the sheet metal lining the base of chimneys on rooftops. The purpose of this sheet of metal is to keep the area where the chimney intersects with the rooftop watertight.
Time To Work On It
Leaks happen if the roof chimney flashing is either rusted, falling out, improperly installed or just simply missing. Sometimes you’ll find the base of chimneys covered with roofing tar (which is definitely a sign that something’s afoot!). On either case, you’d have to perform chimney flashing repair or install a new one.
You might also want to install new chimney flashing when you install new shingles on your roof. This way, you’ll be sure your flashing will last as long as your new roofing. If you install them properly, you’ll get around 20 to 40 years. Read more »

But this doesn’t mean you can’t learn how to mud and tape drywall yourself. You will need to develop a feel for the flexibility of your drywall taping tools and your other equipment.
Let’s take a look at some tips from expert drywall contractors and find out how they do it.
Tip #1: Don’t start unless the drywall is ready
Make sure that the drywall is tight against wall and ceiling, and that the joints are secured in place. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of fasteners and screws. Ensure that seams are tapered tight, with a slight gap for allowance. Give joints a gap of about a quarter of an inch. When you’re done all that, your drywall should be ready.
Tip #2: Use the right tools
When performing drywall finishing jobs, don’t just limit yourself to one broad knife. Keep two sizes handy, such as 10 and 12-inch knives. Stainless steel knives are a favorite among expert drywall contractors. For taping, on the other hand, use a flexible steel one that’s about 5-inches in width. As for tapes, use high-quality drywall joint tape or self adhesive drywall tape. Read more »

T1 11 Siding – Plywood Siding Vs. OSB Siding
Despite the dwindling popularity of t1 11 siding, which reached its peak back in the 60′s all the way to the early 80′s, t1 11 is still viable for most of today’s houses. T1 11 wood siding is still in mass production. If you’re still looking for a more natural-looking, wood-grained siding for your home, t1 11 still stands as an optimal choice.
Quality and Price
T1 11 siding comes in two types: plywood and oriented stand board (OSB). In terms of t1 11 siding prices, plywood siding wins the race. Plywood siding may cost more than OSB but it is, nevertheless, far more superior in terms of quality. It’s more durable and it works well with most types of finishing. If you’re looking for a more natural look for your wood, you can stain it. You can also prime and paint it if you prefer. Read more »
Step-By-Step Guide To Using A Carpet Stretcher
A carpet stretcher is a handy tool that’s used in installing and repairing wall-to-wall carpets. It’s used to keep the carpeting flat, tight and even across the floor.
Typical carpet stretchers are long, equipped with ridges or teeth along the bottom. Using levers attached to it, you can keep the carpet taut while you tack and secure its edges. Though the length of most carpet stretchers make it inconvenient for you to move across them, they’re commonly manufactured using lightweight materials. This makes it easy for you to move it around whenever you need to.
Using carpet power stretchers can help save you more time and energy in installing carpets. Here are the basic steps you need to take in using a power stretcher. You will need your carpet power stretcher, tack strip, carpet knife and knee kicker for this, so have them ready.
Step 1: Place tack strips around the room. For best results, keep it about two-thirds the thickness of the carpet away from your wall. Afterwards, place the carpet pad. Read more »
Essential Do’s and Don’ts In Using Drywall Stilts
What are drywall stilts? These are stilts drywall workers use in order to reach high places while working on their projects. These are similar to normal stilts that help one stand firmly and safely at a certain level, except that these come with bolts and can be adjusted.
These tools are very durable and helpful. However, to maximize use of them you will need to follow certain precautions when using them. Here are some tips on how to properly use a drywall stilt.
- Do inspect your stilts before use. Make sure the bolts are securely and tightly fastened and fixed.
- Do tread on suitable surfaces. Make sure you use your stilts on hard, stable and even surfaces. Unless you have proper support, avoid using them on uneven ground.
- Don’t try to walk backwards. If you need to work on something that’s behind you, take the time to make a nice broad U-turn to get to it.
- Do take short steps and lift your leg when you walk. Do not attempt to take long strides with your drywall stilts. Also, do not drag your stilts as you walk; lift your feet from the ground.
- Don’t reach out or lean your body too much while working. As much as possible, work directly above your stilts. Never reach for objects that are located lower than where your foot is.
- Don’t attempt to adjust the height of your stilts while you’re wearing them. If you must leave them on, ask for assistance from another person. Read more »
Drywall Prices – Tips On How To Precisely Estimate The Cost
It doesn’t matter whether you are a worker trying to bid on a project or a homeowner just trying to anticipate his or her expenses. Estimating drywall prices is an exercise that challenges your attention to detail. You don’t need to be skilled enough to pull it off but you need to learn about how the process of dry walling works.
Factors That Affect Drywall Pricing
Here are the factors that greatly affect the final price of a drywall project:
- The size of the project or job – Most people believe that the larger the drywall project the more laborers will charge you for it. On the contrary, that’s not true. Most drywall contractors typically refuse to take small jobs but are willing to do so at a considerably higher price.
- Materials – This will depend on how much material you need (which depends on the size of the drywall project) and where you buy them from.
- Level of expertise – Expect expert drywall contractors to charge more. After all, quality does come at a price.
- How fast you want the work done – Don’t be afraid to pay more if you want your drywall contractors to finish the job within a relatively small time frame.
- Fresh job or unfinished project – Most drywall contractors will refuse to finish someone else’s work. A lot of rework will have to be done and most contractors will just choose to start over again, thus increasing the drywall installation prices. For scenarios like these, expect to pay more.
Witex Flooring Review
If you are looking for a decent laminate flooring option, then Witex flooring is one of your many choices. While most laminate floors are very similar in terms of quality, it’s always good to familiarize yourself with each brands different offerings before you decide which one to go with. When it comes to Witex laminate flooring you will have a few different options, and we will outline briefly those options today.
Generic Features of a Witex Floor
Witex floors have some general features that you should get to know. Not all of their 6 sub-brands/levles of flooring have each option, so make sure you check before you make your purchase.
- Textures – Witex has basically 3 different types of textures: smooth grain, True-to-Grain, and a high-gloss finish texture. In order to get the True-to-Grain you will need to get their Artison line, and to get the high-gloss you will need to purchase the Witex Gandeur Collection.
- Edging – You can choose between a smooth edge or a beveled edge (the beveled edge is available in the Town and Country line of laminate.
- Plus! Sitlent Comfort Backing – This is the companies cushioning and noise reduction technology. Like most companies, they claim that it reduces noise and makes the floor feel more ‘solid’ than other laminate floors. One nice thing about the Witex comfort backing is that it does come attached already to their floors, making it easier to install.
- Surface Armor (r) – this is an aluminum oxide protection that is applied to every one of their floors. It’s purpose is to prevent scratches and bumps/indentions. Again, most laminate companies offer some type of similar protection.
- LocTec (r) – one very nice advantage of witex laminate floors is that they do come with a good locking mechanism that does not require any type of glue, even in high-moisture areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
- Aqua Protect (r) – This is a protection layer (not available on all of their labels) that, much like it’s name suggests, protects against water damage. This is probably a decent and smart option for water prone areas, but remember no matter what the warranty is on your laminate floor, you should not allow water to sit on the floor for extended periods of time. The Aqua Protect (r) will help, but will not solve the problem.
Summary
There are some nice features that you can find with Witex flooring. Remember that you are still dealing with laminate (there is no such thing as Witex wood flooring, they only offer laminate products), and as such don’t expect a full wood replacement. However, you should get a decent, solid laminate floor that can be a good option for your home.

How to Find Good, Cheap Bamboo Flooring
When it comes to finding good, cheap bamboo flooring there are a specific issues that you will want to pay attention to. Bamboo flooring can be great – it can be an economical, earth-friendly, and great looking option for people looking for new flooring. However, there are some potential issues that you need to be aware of if you are looking for the best cheap bamboo flooring available.
First of all, one way to get a cheap bamboo floor is to compromise on the hardness level. All floors are measured by the ‘Jank Hardness’ scale (where the hardest wood floor, the Brazilian Walnut, has a rating of 3684 pounds), so this is how you tell how hard your bamboo floor will be. This is very important if you want your floor to last a long time and if you want it to look good for more than a few years. As such, this is the first thing you should check when you go to buy bamboo flooring. Normal hardness levels can range anywhere from 1180 to 3000 lbs, with the harder the floor equating to a higher number and typically a higher price as well. The question really is: do you need a floor with a Jank Hardness ranking of 3000 pounds? In most cases, probably not. However, if you are looking to throw a lot of high-end parties (where women will wear high heels), having kids running around and banging things on the floor, or just are hard on floors in general then you may want to consider spending a little more money and get the harder floor – that may end up being the better deal in the long run.
