Many times when you walk into a carpet store they will quote you a price that includes the carpet pad. Many times people don’t even think about this aspect of carpeting – all they really are concentrating on is how good the carpet looks, and in some case how soft it feels with their shoes off. However, not paying attention to the under carpet pad could be a huge mistake – one that costs you a lot of money in the long run.

While many times the carpet pads that come with the carpet can be the best carpet pad on the market, you need to be able to understand if it truly is quality padding for your carpet, or if you are being sold some discount carpet pad that will not last very long, will not provide you with the comfort you are desiring, and (worst of all) will cause your carpet to not last as long as it should. Obviously, you do not want this to happen.

So, what can you do to ensure that you are not getting ripped off? The first thing that you need to do is educate yourself. And this step is easy since there are so many great internet sites now that can educate you on how to get the carpet pad that is best for your home. In doing your research and shopping, you need to be able to answer these questions:

What other options are available for the type of carpet I want to purchase? Again, don’t get stuck just taking the default option – many times this default is the poor carpet padding, not the good stuff you want. And, even if it is the good stuff, it doesn’t hurt to ask questions and find out just in case.

What type of padding will be best for my carpet and the areas that the carpet will be put? Generally speaking, you want thicker carpet pads in areas that are lower traffic areas (think living room) while you want thinner carpet in places like hallways that will see much more traffic. The actual thickness, however, is very important. You need to make sure that you find out the recommended pad thickness for your specific carpet so you don’t have problems with sliding, or stretching.

What is the carpet pad cost that you will have to pay? Obviously the best pad will generally cost more upfront, but is that upfront cost going to save you money in the long run? Or, will a middle-grad foam pad be sufficient?

Ultimately, it’s very important to remember that this decision is one that will affect you for years to come. Make sure you make it wisely, and only make it after you feel you have enough information.
