White Oak Flooring: A Practical Option for Remodeling

When remodeling your home there are many flooring options to consider. It is important to take your time and consider the many options available to you, however if you do decide to go with a wood flooring then white oak flooring is a good, reliable option. White oak hardwood flooring could add a new level of elegance and beauty to your home. White oak hardwood flooring has a strength and durability that is superior to many of the other types of wood, even other hardwoods. White oak is generally a straight grained wood that is a medium to course texture. This type of wood can generate many patterns from the different ways to saw or slice the tree. When this floor is installed in your home it is generally stained and sealed to enable it ability to stay looking nice for a long time.

White oak floor can be used in all areas of your home without fear of damage if installed and sealed properly. It is a very heavy, strong and hard wood that wears very well and endures use beautifully. Another option of when considering oak flooring is red oak. Many people prefer the look of red oak flooring to the white oak coloring. White oak is a light grayish brown color, where as red oak is a warmer redish brown color that can add warmth to a home. However, there are many characteristics that make white oak superior in quality to red oak. White oak has longer rays, which make it more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Its thin strips run the length of the boar and are generally 3/4 of an inch in width, whereas red oaks are shorter and only 1/2 inch in width. White oak also has swirls and bores that add to the distinction of the wood. White oak is also superior to red because it is harder and less porus. However, if the color is a problem for you then it can be easity rectified by staining the white oak to a similar color as the red oak would contribute to your home.

Another thing to consider when determining if you want white oak hardwood flooring is if you want quartersawn white oak flooring. Quartersawn oak is a more expensive cut as the tree is cut at a 90 degree angle from the rings of the tree, causing it to be more time consuming to cut as well as yielding less wood per tree. However, this method of cutting wood is superior and provides a superior quality wood as well as on that is more aesthetically pleasing upon completion.

If when remodeling your home you realize that hardwood is out of your price range, keep in mind that white oak laminant flooring is also an option that is cheaper and sustains wear well. However, it is not a true hardwood and would not add the same level of charm to your home.
